I'm beyond thrilled to announce that Lerer Hippeau Ventures is joining FreshTracks Capital to help power some amazing new service offerings for our clients. I can't wait to show you what's coming!

BURLINGTON, Vermont – Social Sentinel, Inc., the leading service that alerts campus and community leaders to actionable threats shared publicly on social media today announced it has completed a $3 million Series A round of financing. Lerer Hippeau Ventures (LHV) of New York City joined Vermont-based FreshTracks Capital in the round. The investment will help the company aggressively expand sales and marketing efforts, as well as accelerate product development. FreshTracks Capital Managing Director Lee Bouyea will join Social Sentinel’s Board of Directors.

“As one of the leading seed investors in technology, we believe an open, connected and diverse world is a better world. However, we know the growth in public social media has coincided with an explosion of actionable threats of harm to people, places and things. Those charged with ensuring the safety of our communities are looking for a way to address these threats while balancing respect for individual freedom,” said Eric Hippeau, Managing Partner with Lerer Hippeau Ventures.  “We have seen many other companies attempt to apply the techniques used to measure sentiment and brand engagement to solve this problem with limited success. We believe that Social Sentinel’s unique approach and singular focus on safety and security positions the company to own the space.”

The Social Sentinel® service alerts campus and community leaders to locally relevant public safety issues shared publicly on social media. Working with the nation’s leading experts in campus safety, data science, social media linguistics and abnormal behaviors, the company developed patent-pending algorithms that map the language and behaviors of harm to the social graph. The platform applies decades of domain expertise in safety, security, data science, gaming algorithms, artificial intelligence and the ever-changing social media vernacular to predict harm to people, places and things. It does so while respecting privacy, freedom and the right to free speech.

“Social Sentinel is united by a mission to keep people safe in this world while preserving constitutional rights to free expression and association,” said Dr. Gary Margolis, Chief Executive Officer at Social Sentinel. “Our system pays attention to language and behavior on public social media and when speech becomes an actionable public threat that signifies imminent harm (to self, to places, to others), we generate a threat alert in near real time - so that our client may act to diffuse a potentially bad outcome.”

Social Sentinel (Twitter | Facebook) is a safety and security company led and advised by some of the industry’s most respected safety officers and advocates. The company’s flagship offering, the Social Sentinel® social media threat alert service, helps safety and security officials better protect their respective communities by flagging potential threats shared publicly on social media sites – enabling better oversight and swifter resource management when a threat emerges.
